If it looks like you won't receive need-based financial aid:
  • Gather information: Call or write the colleges of interest to you to find out what they cost, whether they have extended payment plans, and what need-based and non-need-based financial aid resources they have that your family might qualify for.
  • Look at your own financial situation: Do you have savings that you can tap for college expenses? What can you afford to pay on a monthly basis toward college expenses? Are you willing to make loan repayments for up to ten years after the student gets out of school?
  • Save: Start a regular savings program--especially if it will be several years before the student goes to college. The more you save before college, the less you have to pay from monthly income, and the less you must borrow from non-need-based student loan programs.

If you don’t receive enough financial aid to cover the cost of your education:

  • Call or write to the Financial Aid Office of the college that sent the Notice of Award. The Financial Aid staff can explain the need analysis, and, depending upon the situation, may be able to change the award.
  • Ask the Financial Aid staff of the college for information about non-need-based student loan programs.
  • If you need more assistance, contact OSAC! We will do our best to make sure that you can attend college.
